Providing Knowledge, Stategy and Support for the development of skills in the resources industry

Breakfast Seminar: Technology Opportunities in Mining Simulation

Breakfast seminar: Technology Opportunities in Mining Simulation

The seminar will be held 7.30am – 9.00am, Wednesday 14 October, Sebel & Citigate, King George Square, Brisbane. The event is supported by the Queensland Department of Employment, Economic Development and Innovation.

Speakers:

- Deanna Hutchinson, Mining Industry Skills Centre – "Games-based simulator training produces long-term behavioural change"

PROJECT CANARY is a world first for serious gaming in the mining and resources sectors. It has been developed by the Mining Industry Skills Centre to assist the industry achieve zero harm in the workplace. This is achieved by encouraging significant behavioural change and safe working practices through practical feedback within the simulation. In all demonstrations to mining and resources companies and contractors, PROJECT CANARY has provoked positive comment.

- Elliot Duff, CSIRO ICT Centre Autonomous Systems Lab and Con Caris, 3D Visualisation Coordinator, CSIRO Mining Automation Group – "The future of simulation in mining"

Computer simulation has made significant advances over the last two decades. Today simulation technology is finding its way into many diverse applications, e.g. planning, animation, training, gaming and visualization. This presentation will discuss how these technologies are being used in the mining industry, and how these technologies will evolve for the mine of the future.

- Ted Blackmon, Director, Construction Solutions, Bentley Systems – "Simulation in the NASA Mars Program, and how this has now progressed into the Construction and Operational environment in the Mining environment".

Deanna Hutchison is Chief Advisor –Learning and Development at the Mining Industry Skills Centre. Her role is to develop best practice training on behalf of the mining and resources industry. Prior to joining the Mining Industry Skills Centre, Deanna was employed for six years in the TAFE system, developing and implementing strategic plans for technology implementation in various TAFE Institutes and campuses. Deanna is a Bachelor of Business graduate from Central Queensland University.

Elliot Duff is a principal research scientist with CSIRO’s ICT Centre Autonomous Systems Lab based in Brisbane. His formal training is in computational physics and metallurgical engineering, but he has been involved in many aspects of autonomous systems development including: image processing, visualization, navigation and embedded systems design. Since 1999 his main focus has been field robotics and in particular the development of control and sensing systems that allow machines to operate autonomously outdoors in hostile and unstructured environments. He currently leads the remote mining project within the MDU Flagship with interests in immersive and interactive visualization for the mining industry.

Con Caris has worked as a computer analyst/programmer and software engineer for the past 30 years. He is the 3D Visualisation Coordinator for the Mining Automation group at CSIRO Exploration & Mining where he manages a team of software engineers who specialise in the research and development of real-time interactive visualisation and data integration systems. His main areas of research are: Remote monitoring systems for mine automation and teleroperation; Immersive visualisation environments; Human-Computer integration; and Cluster based scalable graphics for high-resolution displays and projection systems.
