GI Safety Induction

What is GI?

GI is a safety induction program for the industry workplace designed to provide resource industry workers with core skills before undertaking a site induction. Since establishing the program in 1997, the Mining Industry Skills Centre has continued to develop GI with the aim of reducing repetitive induction training within the resources industry.

Why was GI developed?

The mining industry used to finance significant duplication in induction training provided to contractors as they moved from site to site.

In collaboration with the mining industry, the Mining Industry Skills Centre (then the Queensland Mining Industry Training Advisory Body) developed the Generic Induction (GI) training program to standardise the training to non-permanent mine-site workers.  GI was launched in 1997 and is now being delivered in Queensland, New South Wales, Western Australia, the Northern Territory and Victoria.

In 2006 the University of Queensland reviewed the Program and a revitalised GI was launched in 2007.

In late 2009, the Skills Centre conducted a stakeholder review of GI. The result was an overwhelming endorsement from the industry for the need for an industry-wide induction program.

In response to this feedback, the Skills Centre reviewed the GI delivery structure and will release GI v3 in April 2010.

What are the benefits?

GI provides a centralised, quality-assured and standardised training program giving mine-sites peace of mind. Once the program is completed workers are able to move between sites and have a large portion of their induction training recognised without compromising the site’s legislative requirements.

The program is easily managed with participant information recorded in a centralised database for easy reference by employers. Credit card sized ‘passports’ are issued to graduates and when presented at a site which recognises GI, the worker only needs to complete site-specific induction training.

The quality of GI delivery is stringently regulated by the Mining Industry Skills Centre, ensuring world class training.
