Attraction and Retention Project

What is the Attraction and Retention Project?

The project “Attract, Develop & Retain – Initiatives to Sustain a Competitive Workforce”, consists of two research papers that work towards ensuring the mining industry can attract and retain appropriate employees.

This is an important strategy in reducing the skills shortage that currently exists.

The first research paper, Innovative Practices Across Different Industries, was completed in February 2008 and distributed via Community Breakfasts, Network Meetings and a National mail-out to resource organizations Human Resources and Training personnel.

The paper provides an insight into how other industries develop and implement various attraction and retention strategies to ensure that the right people are in the right job at the right time.

The second research paper will focus solely on the mining industry, and will commence in October.

The purpose of this paper is to provide the mining industry with a best practice approach to developing and implementing retention strategies which will contribute to sustaining a competitive workforce within the mining industry.

Various mining organisations will be asked to be a part of the research process so that the research is as effective and accurate as possible.  By working collaboratively on this, the industry will benefit from the research in regards to:

  • Implementing retention strategies to prevent loss of knowledge by those retiring
  • Understanding the generational differences of the workforce and how to attract and retain baby boomers, Gen X and Gen Y
  • Using innovative rewards and benefits structures to increase employee loyalty and commitment
  • Incorporating flexible working arrangements into the workplace; and
  • Effectively communicating and engaging employees
